Missing Ladies: Chhaya Kadam aka Manju Maai breaks silence on ongoing controversy over non-female jury for Oscars 2025; ‘Film Samjhaana Zyaada…’

Kiran Rao’s film ‘Missing Ladies’ being sent to Oscars 2025 stirred controversy as the selection jury did not have women. Also, many internet users called out the Indian Film Federation for referring to Indian women as a ‘strange mix of obedience and dominance’ in their description, which is what ‘Missing Ladies’ is about as their choice. Meanwhile, Chaaya Kadam stressed that nothing is more important than the connoisseurs who make these choices.

Recently, while talking to News18 Showsha, Chaaya Kadam gave her opinion on this. She said, “We are film people. It is important that only film connoisseurs, be it men or women, select films. It is more important to understand the film and nothing is more important than that.”

The Madgaon Express actress expressed her happiness that the film, starring Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava and Nitanshi Goyal, was selected as India’s official entry for 1997.th He said he was excited about the honor because he believed it would give more people a chance to see it.

“But yes, I truly believe Missing Ladies should get an Oscar and I have a gut feeling that it will happen.”

Notably, Missing Ladies has been selected from 29 films on the list. The films in competition also included Chaaya’s All We Imagine As Light, which did not make the cut. Reacting to this, the veteran actress mentioned that both are her babies. She said she is equally excited about both the films. Nevertheless, she is sure that her Cannes-winning film will make it to the Oscars.

He further said that All We Imagine As Light’s director Payal Kapadia is a different woman. He also congratulated Kiran Rao’s directorial team.

The film Missing Ladies, produced under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, was also screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023. It received a standing ovation from the audience present at the festival. It was later released in theatres and then later on the OTT platform Netflix.
