Hollywood movie Michael earned Rs. Earned around Rs 6.50 crore (USD 690K) on Saturday, taking its two-day cumulative box office collection in India to Rs. ₹12.70 crore (USD 1.35 million) approx. The film showed a solid growth of 45 percent, which as progress looked like it would be down to some extent, but the walk-up business yesterday was very good. The weekend is poised to reach around Rs. 20 crores, which is a fantastic number for a Hollywood musical biopic.
For some perspective, Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide, only made Rs. 7 crores in India. Not a biopic, but Taylor Swift: The Era’s Tour made Rs. 13 crores in the country.
Michael is still inspired by the South Indian circuit, albeit to a lesser extent, as the Hindi circuit has grown better on Saturdays. Tamil Nadu-Kerala topped the list, followed by Karnataka, with Mumbai at third position. This was due to the decline in popularity of English music in the Hindi heartland, which was mostly a uniquely urban Indian phenomenon, while local music dominated the market. In India, Michael Jackson was probably more popular for his dancing and traditionally, dance films have performed better in Mumbai and South India, while performing poorly in the North.
Michael has made a strong debut around the world. In North America, it is on track to gross US$90–100 million in its opening weekend. The overseas weekend gross is estimated by the studio at US$111 million. The worldwide weekend gross will be north of US$200 million; In the long term, it could aim for USD 1 billion.
