Maya Sabha: The Hall of Illusion, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Javed Jaffrey in the lead alongside Veena Jamkar, Deepak Damle and Mohammed Samad, closed on a low note in its opening weekend. According to estimates, the psychological mystic film will make just Rs. Could collect Rs. 50 lakh in its first three days of theatrical run at the Indian box office.
The film was released on very limited screens along with Rani Mukherjee’s Mardaani 3, which is why the collection was very low. Had the film received good distribution and performance, it could have registered a slightly better weekend debut.
Presented by the director of Tumbbad, Maya Sabha: The Hall of Illusion has received mixed responses among audiences and critics. Based on a very original idea, it’s a proper indie experimental film, which means it never had any kind of big box office expectations. According to Rahi Anil Barve himself, the production cost of the film is less than seven figures, which is a big plus.
Furthermore, the film was released with zero to minimal marketing. Whatever the film is doing at the box office is coming entirely from the urban audience, who are aware of the release of Maya Sabha: The Hall of Illusion. The Javed Jaffrey-led film needs to show strong hold on weekdays to at least recover its production costs. It will be interesting to see whether the film is able to do something amazing in the long run and achieve good growth through word of mouth publicity or not.
