At least 10 people, including the suspected gunman, were wounded when a shooter opened fire at a crowded entertainment area in downtown Tucson, Arizona, early Sunday, police said.According to the Tucson Police Department, officers on routine foot patrol heard gunshots around 2 a.m. local time and arrived at the scene. Reuters cited Tucson Police Department spokesman Frank Magos as reporting that they confronted the suspect, issued “repeated commands” and then shot him.Police officers immediately provided first aid to the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Magos said during a media briefing near the scene.Before police arrived, nine other adults were shot and taken to hospitals. Many people were shot in their arms and legs and their condition was said to be critical. No police officer was injured in the incident. Authorities have not officially released what led to the shooting.According to local broadcaster KGUN-TV, citing police sources, the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between two groups of people who knew each other, with several bystanders caught in the crossfire.“A shooter recklessly opened fire in a crowded area before being stopped by a Tucson police officer, killing nine people,” Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said in a statement, quoted by KGUN.“All the victims are in stable condition and have been taken to hospital, where we hope they will all recover,” he said.The suspect allegedly attempted to run away before being shot by a responding officer, police said.
