Snapping their 4-day losing streak, Indian benchmark indices ended Tuesday’s trade marginally higher, led by gains from PSU banks, metals and auto stocks after a gap-up opening.

While the S&P BSE Sensex rose 169.62 points or 0.22% to settle at 76,499.63, the Nifty gained 90.10 points or 0.39% to close at 23,176.

Top gainers and losers

Nifty’s breadth was skewed in favor of gainers as 34 stocks were in the green, 16 in the red while one remained unchanged. Adani Enterprises, Shriram Finance, Adani Ports, Hindalco and NTPC were the top gainers while the top losers were HCL Tech, HUL, Apollo Hospitals, Titan and Infosys.

Among the Nifty sectoral indices, the Nifty PSU Bank Index rose the most (4.20%), followed by the Nifty Metal Index (3.98%) and the Nifty Media Index (2.97%) to end the day on a positive note, while the Nifty FMCG and Nifty IT. The only laggards were 1.41% and 2.13% declines, respectively.
