Mani Ratnam’s wife Suhasini comments on their marriage of over 30 years, explains how mutual respect is what keeps them strong

Mani Ratnam is undoubtedly one of the country’s greatest filmmakers, renowned for bringing unique cinematic experiences to the silver screen. However, beyond his identity as a filmmaker, he is a completely different person in his personal life. Providing insight into this, his wife Suhasini made some candid comments about the impeccable life they have built together.

In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Suhasini Mani Ratnam shared that mutual respect is the key to her marriage with Mani Ratnam. Although they both have creative minds, they make sure they listen to each other and respect each other’s creative abilities.

She said, “We both listen to each other’s creative output. We may not do it the first day we have an idea, but I respect his creative ability and he respects my creative ability. Therefore, there cannot be any major argument.” Yes, there will be arguments because I’m very concerned about that.”

Continuing the conversation, Suhasini also expressed her concerns for her husband, who works in a dynamic environment with individuals whose personalities do not always match with his.

He commented that he was concerned about how these negative influences might change Mani Ratnam, which might later affect the cinema he would make.

Suhasini commented, “When he works with a cinematographer who uses four-letter words in every sentence, I tell him it will seep into your dialogues because you are so close to him. That kind of I worry about effects because cinema is a reflection of life. Whatever you see in life is reflected in cinema.

At the end of the interview, Suhasini also shared a valuable advice she got from her husband, who always told her to never take things for granted. He revealed how Mani Ratnam constantly advises him to work smart rather than hard.

For those unaware, Mani Ratnam and Suhasini tied the knot in 1988. The couple has worked together in several films, where he wrote the stories and Suhasini directed them. Some of these projects include Roja, Raavan, Thiruda Thiruda, Iruvar and more.
