For someone who has spent decades as one of India’s most beloved stars, Madhuri Dixit has been remarkably successful in embracing every phase of life with the same grace. From ruling the box office in the 1990s to stepping away from the limelight at the peak of his career, raising a family in the US and later reinventing himself in films, television and streaming, the actor has rarely followed a predictable script.

The actress opened up about leaving India after marrying cardiovascular surgeon Dr Sriram Nene and moving to the US in 1999, a decision that surprised many at a time when she was one of the biggest stars of Hindi cinema. Looking back, Madhuri said that this change gave her the opportunity to live a very different dream.
She said, “When I went there, I wasn’t the center of attention; I had kids. So life didn’t revolve around me. My life revolved around the kids. It was a very different experience, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Because I love kids. It was one of my dreams to have kids. I was living my dream when I was there.”
Madhuri also revealed that when she met Dr Nene for the first time, she had no idea of the scale of his stardom. Having grown up in America and dedicating his life to medicine, Bollywood was far from his world.
“He knew I was an actress. But it didn’t have the full effect, which he realized when I came back,” she said, laughing.
Years later, the actor returned to India and resumed work on films, reality television, and streaming projects, while Dr. Nene gradually became a familiar face to fans through social media presence and public appearances.
The conversation also turned to another challenge that has stayed with him throughout his career: balancing audience expectations with his own desire to grow.
When asked if her wholesome, family-friendly image makes experimentation difficult, Madhuri said that growth always matters more than being safe.
She said, “Yes, you have to cater to your audience, but you also want to grow as an actor. You don’t want to become stagnant and do the same roles because the audience will start saying that she is doing the same thing.”
Pointing to the choices made by Madhuri Dixit over the years, the actor argued that she has consciously avoided repetition, often choosing roles that challenge the audience’s perception of expectations from her.
