MAARGAN RIVIEW: The ambitious thriller of Vijay Antony lacks punch

Music director-actor-actor Vijay Antony has a habit of choosing interesting stories. However, his choice has been suspicious over the years. The actor now returns to a crime thriller ‘Margan’ about a serial killer. Will ‘Margan’ give Vijay Antony a very important relief from a string of a very essential movies? Let’s know!
Dhruv (Vijay Antony), ADGP in Mumbai is mourning the loss of his daughter, who was murdered by a serial killer. He is informed about another similar murder in Chennai. A relationship between the two cases is that the killer has injected a drug that blacks one’s body. Dhruv expresses interest in transferring to Chennai to investigate the murder. However, his superiors did not let him go to overcome his daughter’s loss. While trying to nab the killer, he turns black to the left after injections with the drug.
When he informally comes to Chennai to investigate the murder, police officers narrowed their doubts for Tamilivu (Ajay Dhaition) after analyzing clues and fingers. Initially, a suspect, the actions of Tamilillivu take the police correctly. Who is the killer? Why are they using skin-blacking drugs? What is their motive? All these questions have been answered in the thriller, which has two hours and 12 minutes of crisp runtime.
Director Leo John Paul’s ‘Margan’ does not waste time in establishing the story. It first dives deeply from the frame in the correct case. The film examines a crime thriller with supernatural elements characterized by ancient sages. While the concept is interesting, the execution stumbles. A whodunnit thriller is about the purpose of all criminals and an effective backstory. So far, we know that the initial clues act as a catalyst only to find the main killer.

‘Maargan’ also follows the same pattern, except that it rarely provides any adventure that is essential for a investigative thriller. The staging feels artificial and clue that Dhruv and his team do not excite you in the way the film intends. When a crime thriller does not find you to sit on the edge of your seat, it says a lot about the script.
Director Leo John Paul’s film mixes the thriller with supernatural elements. However, it provides an explanation that the base is not sufficient enough to buy. The killer appears in the last 20 minutes and the film talks about an important message. While the message emphasizes the current passion among the youth, it barely scratches the surface.
Another point of controversy in ‘Margan’ is that it brands the people of Dharavi carelessly. Filmmaker, who is also editor, could stay away from such clicht and opted for more neutral tale.
As Vijay Antony, as police officer Dhruv, played his role, and so Ajay Dhaition, who played a person with supernatural and great memory powers. The way Ajay’s Arivu Dhruv helps lead the investigation, he makes ‘Margan’ interesting from a distance. Vijay works effectively in the construction of music suspense by Antony that could not script.
‘Maargan’ is a high-concept thriller who could do better work with better staging.
