Maareesan Review: Fahadh-Vadivelu’s road trip takes wrong turn post-interval
Maareesan Movie Review: Director Sudhesh Shankar’s ‘Maareesan’, which has a comedy thriller starring Vadivelu and Fahd Fasil. While the film keeps you with a brilliant first half, it turns a formula in the second half.

In short
- Vadivelu and Fahd Fasil reunited in Tamil Comedy thriller ‘Marnson’
- Humor and vintage strong first half with Tamil songs attract the audience
- Post-interval weakens the story for predictive thriller
Release date: 25 July, 2025
The Tamil Comedy Legend Vadivelu and the magnificent artist Fahad Fasil together for the second time after ‘Maamannan’ ‘Maareesan’. While both have their own personal strength, they are great artists. Giving them a role, their eyes are enough to pull them. Director Sudhesh Shankar’s ‘Marsen’ is a comedy thriller, a style that can either be effective or a total misfire.
Dayalan (Fahd Fasil) is a thief who is out of the infamous Palayakottai Jail. In his words, some houses talk to them and call them, so that they can rob them. Soon after his return, he was called by Veluadham Pillai (Vadivelu) House. He breaks into the house to steal, but only to find chains on his bed.
Stating that he is an Alzheimer’s patient, Veluadham requested Dayalan to leave him at the nearest bus stand, so he could go to his friend’s place in Thiruvanamalai. A pit-stop in the ATM gives Dayalan a major reason for living. Why? Because Valeudam has Rs 25 lakh in his account. Dayalan gets out of his way, works well, puts with his tantrums, only he gets to remember his ATM pin. As he offers to leave him in Thiruvanamalai, compassion and velutis take us through a trip to sympathy, compassion, manipulation and betrayal.
‘Marison’ is an ideal title for a film that hinges so much on privacy and manipulation. The initial few seconds of the film have a VFX sequence that includes a snake and a rat. This sequence, which can initially be out of place, catches the essence of the film. The film is about two men, with their ambitions and ideals, to life. A man, an Alzheimer’s patient, survives the house to complete a mission he guarded with his life. Another man wants to steal money from an almazimer patient for a better life.

The story of two contradictions makes ‘Maareesan’ so interesting that you almost assume that it is another ‘meiyazhagan’. This is the sympathy of the beloved tantrums or kindness of the veladham, you cannot help, but fall in love with this pair. And when there is a big disclosure during the interval, you are simply dodged with a delightful turn that kills you on the face. Despite the slow pacing of the film, it works due to how well the first half is staged. You travel with two characters as they go on a road trip.
You feel bad when Velayudham forgets the simplest things due to your situation. You reveal the playful act of Dayalan. The way both vintage breaks into Tamil songs and breaks the jokes on Kamal Haasan, there is a lot to love. But when the interpretation occurs and the film changes its track from a comedy to the thriller, the tone of the film changes. And it removes all the goodness packed in the first half.
While the film is refreshed and confusing the East-Astral, it overshadows the prophecies and clitch to deal with a heinous crime. Although the characters are morally flawed, the film takes a film to deal with criminals, which sticks like a thumb in a throat. While the traditionalist film can agree with the climax, producers fail to tap in a message that is politically correct.
One of the main reasons why I will appreciate the manufacturers of ‘Marsen’, the way they have portrayed the crime. As citizens of this country, we hear about such incidents every day. At a time when many filmmakers take an insensitive approach to create shock, the producers of ‘Marison Ke’ play special applause. There is no graphic depiction of crime. Only one mention and some details here and there, and we get its gravity. Why and how they do not take priority.
‘Marson’ started on a great note, before baking under the pressure of bunnyness. Nevertheless, it speaks to you in a language that is immersive. Thanks to the beautiful chemistry between Vadivelu and Fahd Fasil, Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music and cinematographer Kaliselvan Shivaji’s frame.
Vadivelu and Fahd Fasil are terrible actors, there is a statement that everyone knows and believes in it. When Vadivelu’s Veluadham breaks into a scene, you tear. The fact that a comedy legend weeps you with her, she is a will for her acting skills. Fahd Fasil easily jumps into character. So much that you start enjoying it when he is actually stealing and fooling those who believe it. Vivek Prasanna gets a solid role. Despite the limited screen time, he is as effective as Ganesh.
‘Maareesan’ is a comedy thriller who can smile you, catch you on the edge of your seats and support the morally flawed characters. If we look at convenient writing, especially with flashbacks and post-recognition, then there is a lot to love in ‘Marsen’.
