Robert Downey Jr. is set to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but only under certain conditions. According to Variety, Downey Jr. agreed to come back on the condition that the Russo brothers direct the projects he stars in. “He will only work with them,” a source revealed.
Joe and Anthony Russo are set to direct the upcoming ‘Avengers 5’, now titled ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, as well as ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
Initially, the focus of ‘Avengers 5’ was Kang the Conqueror, but Marvel has changed its focus after Jonathan Majors was convicted of negligent assault and harassment.
Variety also reported that the Russo brothers will receive $80 million for directing the two ‘Avengers’ films, while Downey Jr. is set to get “significantly more.” His contract includes perks such as security, private jet travel and “trailer camping.”
The new ‘Avengers’ films will begin shooting in the second quarter of 2025 in London, UK, a departure from the previous Atlanta, US location. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to be released in May 2026.
Details about how Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom are still unclear. It is being speculated that he could be a variation of Tony Stark or a completely different character. After all, anything is possible in the multiverse.
