HS Venkatesh Murthy remained one of the mythological figures of Kannada literature and cinema over the years. He was a talented professor, dialogue writer, lyricist, poet, novelist, and had many other areas of expertise for his name. The literary stallwart has now died at the age of 80.
HS Venkatesh Murthy dies at 80
According to reports, HSV was suffering from age -related slight medical issues. He was 80 years old and died in the morning of 30 May 2025. He was admitted to a private hospital in Kenge, Bangalore.
The news of his death is being mourned in literary circles and Kannada film industry. His passing leaves a void, which he leaves behind, marked by incredible creations.
HS Venkatesh’s career so far
Born in 1944, HS Venkatesh Murthy worked as a lecturer and professor at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce for three decades. He received this doctorate in Bengaluru during this period.
As a writer, HSV published more than 100 books in Kannada. One of his plays, Hovi, was also selected as part of the ICSE course for students of ninth and tenth grade studying Kannada.
HSV’s contribution in films
Apart from books and literature, HS Venkatesh Murthy also contributed significantly to Kannada cinema and television serials.
He worked as a lyricist for several popular film songs, including Rashmika Mandanna-Abhinit Kirik Party’s Track Thogu Manchdalli Kuthu.
HS Venkatesh Awards
Of the many awards and appreciation he received, the senior writer was awarded the Bala Puruskar Award from the Central Sahitya Akademi. He also won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist-Kannada for his work on the film Hasiru Ribbon in 2018-19.
