Kendrick Lamar made a surprise appearance at Compton College’s graduation ceremony after releasing a disparaging track against Drake. In his speech, the rapper emphasized the importance of individuality, courage, and staying true to your roots.
Kendrick Lamar made a surprise appearance at Compton College’s convocation, delivering an inspiring speech to the 2024 graduates. The Pulitzer Prize-winning artist, best known for his hit ‘Humble,’ emphasized the importance of his hometown of Compton, California. This is Kendrick’s first public appearance since releasing his diss track against Drake.
Lamar said, “It’s not only a representation of the world, but it’s a representation of me.” His speech deeply affected the audience, as he praised Compton for giving birth to incredible individuals and urged the younger generation to take control of today’s narrative.
He said, “Some people tell us that this generation doesn’t have what it takes. They are wrong though. Do you know why? Because not only do you have what it takes, you have something even bigger. You have heart. You have the courage to be free thinkers… there is nothing more valuable than that.”
Lamar encouraged the graduates to become independent thinkers and apply what they have learned. He concluded, “This degree that you all have is as great as any degree. It’s all about taking these resources and what you’ve learned and applying them. It’s as simple as that.”
Compton College, founded in 1927, is a public community college in California. Lamar also announced a unique concert ‘The Pop Out-Kane & Friends’ to be held at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on July 19. The event will be streamed live on the Amazon Music Channel on Prime Video and Twitch at 4 pm, coinciding with Black Music Month celebrations.
