Sharing a throwback picture from his childhood, Karan wrote, “It’s hard to express the most important relationship of your life. Words don’t have the power to describe a mother’s place in a child’s life. Unconditional is a small word for a power as big as a mother.”
He further added, “My mother turns 83 today, and the only reason I share this sentiment is because I know it will connect deeply with many others out there. I worry about her health constantly and can’t imagine life without her.”
Filmmaker reflects on mother’s health struggles
Noting his mother’s resilience, the filmmaker also detailed some of the challenges she faced. “She has faced many health issues and yet she insists on blow-drying her hair every day and putting on her lipstick every day and going out in her flowy kaftan so she can enjoy the sun and the Doom Scroll (Gen Z you got nothing on my mom) (sic),” Johar wrote, reflecting both her strength and her commitment to enjoying life’s little joys.
Johar further explained how his mother’s spirit continues to inspire him and his children. “Her spirit is my strength, even when her memory or her thoughts fail. There is a very strong aspect of her that always remembers. Love! My twins and I are blessed. We count our blessings every day when we get a chance to kiss her and say “Love you Mama… Happy Birthday Mama.”
