Director Kanu Bahl has expressed disappointment over his film ‘Agra’ not being shown in multiplexes. He blamed “so-called blockbusters” and urged audiences to support his film.
His X post read, “Update on the movie ‘Agra’: Because of the so called ‘big blockbusters’ and smaller movies not fitting into the multiplex series programming we are being denied shows. It is now up to your viewers! Speak up and tag the series. Say you want to watch the movie! (sic).”
He said, “Spread the word. Otherwise it will just keep going on like this. And there will be no room for anything other than mindless ‘infantilized cinema’.”

‘Agra’ has already garnered international recognition, having premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival, where it was praised for its raw depiction of loneliness and human desire. This erotic psychological drama was co-written and directed by Kanu Bahl. It stars Mohit Aggarwal, Priyanka Bose, Rahul Roy, Dewas Dixit, Ruhani Sharma, Vibha Chhibber, Sonal Jha and Aanchal Goswami in lead roles.
The film focuses on Guru, a young call center employee who lives at home with his parents and finds himself trapped in a cycle of monotonous routine and suppressed desires. Struggling with loneliness, frequent use of dating apps, and delusional fantasies, her increasing desperation slowly leads her to a disturbing psychological breakdown.
The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight section on May 24, 2023. The festival’s description highlighted it as a film that “understands the so-called reality of patriarchy in India through the prism of male sexual suffering.”
In November 2022, ‘Agra’ was selected for the India Film Market – a segment of the South Asia Film Project Market managed by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).
