Kantha review: Dulquer Salmaan delivers an impressive period drama that comes across as a thriller

Kantha, starring Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role, releases in theaters today on November 14, 2025. Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, the film also stars Samuthirakani, Bhagyashree Borse, Rana Daggubati and others in lead roles.

If you are planning to watch this period investigation drama over the weekend, here is a Pinkvilla-style review for you.

plot

Kantha is the story of 1950s Madras superstar TK Mahadevan, widely acclaimed for his acting skills and undeniable charm. However, the star is embroiled in a long-running feud with his former mentor and filmmaker Ayya due to ego-driven conflicts, which has intensified over the years.

As the veteran filmmaker attempts to complete his dream project towards the end of his career, he gets an opportunity to revive his stalled film Santha, which was earlier stalled due to a clash with his disciple.

With the help of a new producer, Santha has been revived, this time with TK Mahadevan with newcomer Kumari in the lead role. But Mahadevan used his influence and prestige to hijack the production, turning it into a film that better suited his own image, eventually renaming it Kantha.

Amidst rising egos and rising tensions, a crew member dies mysteriously, turning the story into a thriller with Inspector Devaraj leading the investigation. The rest of the film focuses on how Mahadevan and Ayya’s rivalry unfolds and who was actually responsible for the death of the crew member.

Good

Kantha features an impressive ensemble cast, with excellent performances across the board. Dulquer Salmaan has given a subtle and balanced portrayal of TK Mahadevan, which leaves a strong impression, especially in the first half.

As the film traces the complex dynamics between its characters, Dulquer skillfully captures both the wild swagger of a superstar and the innocence of an amateur in the flashback portions. The well-crafted writing behind his character adds to the depth and intrigue of the role.

Samuthirakani is equally compelling as Ayya, portraying an idealistic but ego-driven veteran filmmaker with conviction. On the technical front, the film benefits from effective use of music and visuals.

Dani Sanchez-Lopez’s cinematography delivers memorable imagery that evokes emotion and elevates the storytelling. The production design full of retro details immerses us in the world of 1950s Madras.

However, the biggest highlight is the music by Jake Bejoy and Jhanu Chanthar. His blend of classical compositions with modern tones creates a beautiful score that enriches the dramatic elements of the film, even if the thriller aspect is not as strong.

bad

Kantha mainly suffers from inconsistent execution. While the film takes the audience through a wide range of emotions and skillfully builds tension in its narrative, it loses direction once it shifts into the investigative thriller genre.

Driven by the confrontation between Mahadevan and Ayya, the first half progresses smoothly, with Kumari’s participation adding to the interest. But once the investigation aspect takes over, the pace of the film becomes weak.

Style blending becomes uneven, leading to poor performance. As a result, viewers may lose interest and feel dissatisfied with the solution.

Display

As mentioned earlier, Dulquer Salmaan and Samuthirakani are the strongest pillars of the film. Their compelling performances and the tense relationship on-screen keep the film afloat even when the plot falters.

Bhagyashree Borse gives an impressive performance as the leading lady, offering subtle yet charismatic moments. Rana Daggubati, although limited in screen time, makes the most of his role and leaves a solid impact.

Decision

Kantha is an interesting watch as it remains a period drama. But once it turns into an investigative thriller, it struggles to maintain the same impact and loses focus on the key elements introduced in the first part.

Still, if you’re attracted to powerful performances and character-driven drama, this film is worth seeing in theaters.
