Dulquer Salmaan’s Tamil comeback film Kantha directed by Selvamani Selvaraj is finally heading to OTT after an average performance in theatres. The period drama, starring the actor as Tamil cinema’s first superstar T.K. Mahadevan, became a subject of curiosity, but could not maintain the momentum during its theatrical release. Now, the film is all set for a new launch on digital platforms, giving audiences another chance to experience its world and performances.
When and where to see Kantha
Netflix has officially announced that the streaming of Kaantha will start on Friday, December 12, 2025 at 12 AM IST. The film will be available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, allowing audiences from different regions to watch it in their favorite language. Although the Hindi version is not confirmed yet, reports suggest that an update may be coming soon.
Kantha first hit the theaters on November 14, 2025, and stars Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashree Borse, Samuthirakani and Rana Daggubati. The film is set in 1950s Madras and tells the story of a rising superstar Mahadevan and his mentor Ayya. Their strained relationship becomes more complicated when Ayya’s new disciple, Kumari, bonds with Mahadevan, leading to professional and personal tensions.
Despite strong visuals and early praise for its performance, Kantha struggled to attract large crowds. Many audiences missed its short theatrical window, making its digital release even more anticipated.
With Netflix confirming the streaming date, Kantha is expected to find a wide audience online. Many film lovers who could not watch it in theaters are waiting for the OTT release. The platform has also confirmed that the period drama will be available in multiple South Indian languages, making it more accessible.
The film’s retro setting, detailed craftsmanship and the Tamil debut of newcomer Bhagyashree Borse created a buzz right from the start.
The story is based in the world of 1950s Madras
Kantha is set against the backdrop of culturally vibrant Madras. The story revolves around Mahadevan and Ayya, an acclaimed director who shaped his career. Trouble begins when Mahadevan changes the title of a women-centric film from Shanta to Kantha to improve his public image. Tension rises during the shoot and things take a turn for the worse when a murder occurs on the set. Inspector Devaraj begins investigation, placing both Ayya and Mahadevan under investigation.
With themes of ambition, ego, loyalty and power, Kantha presents a layered narrative in the classic era of Tamil cinema.
