Kani Kushruti on playing a rape victim in Assi: Can’t fully capitalize on that trauma
Kani Kushruti, talking about playing the role of a rape victim in Assi, said that it is impossible to completely understand such trauma, but it is necessary to portray it with honesty and sensitivity.

Kani Kushruti recently talked about playing the character of a rape victim in her upcoming film AsiHaving said that, it is impossible to fully understand such trauma but it is important to face it honestly. In a recent interview, she shared that to bring authenticity to the role of Parima, she took inspiration from the collective realities that many women face in India.
talking to PTIHe said, “I don’t think anyone can accurately understand (a survivor’s) trauma. As an actor, we tried to get closest to it, and there can be moments when you’re probably in it because you’re almost believing it happened to you. But I’m not an actor who would completely go through something like that, (because) then it would affect you. I don’t do that.”
Kani said that while she cannot claim to fully understand such trauma, the subject matter is deeply familiar. She added, “As a woman who has grown up in this country since childhood, do I have a sense of such attacks or traumas? Yes, I probably do, because people close to me have gone through it. So, from time to time, it’s one of those things that you become closely associated with, even if you don’t want to.”
The 40-year-old actor said the film also gave him insight into work Legal system in India in cases of sexual violence. He said court proceedings can often reopen old wounds for survivors.
Recalling conversations with friends battling similar legal battles, he said, “To get justice, you have to go through it (pain), so there’s an absurdity and irony within the system, but how you get justice, you can’t forget it. In the film, there’s even a line, ‘They won’t let you forget it.’
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Asi It follows Parima, a married woman living in Delhi who is kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a group of men. The film traces the traumatic outcome, focusing on the police investigation and the legal battle that follows, with Taapsee Pannu playing their lawyer.
The cast also includes Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Manoj Pahwa, Seema Pahwa, Kumud Mishra and Revathi. Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak and Seema Pahwa make special appearances. The film is backed by T-Series and Sinha’s Banaras Mediaworks.
