Kakuda Review: Riteish Deshmukh, Saqib Saleem, Sonakshi Sinha’s horror-comedy neither scares nor makes you laugh

Name: Kakuda

Director: Aditya Sarpotkar

Rating: 2/5

Where to watch: Zee5

plot:

Kakuda is the story of Sunny (Saqib Saleem), a poorly educated man who falls in love with Indira (Sonakshi Sinha). Determined to be together, they marry and move to Ratodi village, but are cursed by an evil ghost named Kakuda. On their wedding night, Sunny fails to open the small door at exactly 7:15 pm, inviting Kakuda, who punishes the head of the house by placing a hump on his back that grows until his death on the thirteenth day. With Sunny’s life in danger, Indira seeks help from ghost hunter Victor (Riteish Deshmukh).

Together, they embark on a journey to solve the mystery of Kakuda, and uncover the shocking truth about the ghost’s identity, motives, and the curse that has haunted the village for decades.

What is Kakuda useful for:

Kakuda has a good concept and an interesting conflict. It is a good family film. With better screenplay and presentation, it has the potential to become one of the best horror-comedies of today. Riteish Deshmukh is in good form and has made the story even better to some extent. Some scenes in the film make you laugh a bit.

What doesn’t work for Kakuda:

Kakuda fails to scare or make you laugh; something it really needed to do. The film doesn’t have the comedy rhythm, right. Kakuda feels like a cocktail of horror-comedies like Stree, Bhediya and Munjya. The horror-comedy template is getting repetitive now and they are generally becoming increasingly formulaic too. Despite having the potential to invent, the makers seem to be best at playing to the audience.

Performances in Kakuda:

Riteish Deshmukh is a fine actor as Victor. He has done a good job as a crazy ghost hunter.
Sonakshi Sinha as Indira and Saqib Saleem as Sunny are okay. They could have definitely done better, but the script doesn’t offer them much.
The other supporting actors in the film are also amazing. They have acted exactly as was expected of them.

Kakuda’s final verdict:

Kakuda, despite having an interesting concept, turns out to be a dull film that delivers very little of what it promises. With the increasing influx of films in the horror-comedy genre, there is a need for fresh presentation and Kakuda fails to do so.

You can now watch Kakuda on ZEE5.
