Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a milestone in Indian cinema, and according to lead actress Kajol, its enduring success is due to the fans who have made it the longest-running film in history through their unwavering affection. He further said that the film will continue to break its own records every year and added that the producers and cast did not know that the film would receive so much appreciation.
The romantic blockbuster, released in 1995, still enjoys screening at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre, almost three decades later. Celebrating its 29th anniversary on October 20, 2024, the film stars Kajol as Simran and Shah Rukh Khan as Raj. Reflecting on the film, Kajol said that it still feels authentic and relevant to the audience today.
According to PTI, Kajol said, “This is the longest running film in the world at the moment. And it will keep breaking its own records every year. But I think the thing about DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and all these films is that when you watch them they are still real today.”
“You love and adore these characters. I liked this story very much. I was totally into this movie. I enjoyed the film. I loved the music, everything about it. It is an experience. DDLJ is a phenomenon and I think even though we made the film, we didn’t know that this was going to happen with the film. And we didn’t make it for that purpose,” Kajol told PTI.
The actress mentioned that over the years, fans have consistently watched the film and created traditions in their families. He mentioned meeting a man who told that he had taken his girlfriend to a movie show 27 times before proposing to her.
He joked that maybe she had bored him with this film, so he said yes. However, he continued to watch the film with her and eventually had children, who also watched the film.
Although he expressed his desire to take credit for the incident, he clarified that the credit actually belonged to the fans, not him or the team.
Directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra, DDLJ tells the story of Raj and Simran, two young Indians raised abroad who fall in love while on a vacation in Europe.
