If Siren is a Korean drama about how to read between the lines, its lead stars – Park Min-young and Wi Ha-joon – are already fluent in Korean. In an exclusive conversation with India Today, the two shared what their first impression of each other was and whether they are good at reading people. Not only this, Min-Young already has plans for her Bollywood debut. Aladdin and Jasmine inspired the musical. Yes, you read it right!

During a conversation with India Today, when Park Min-Young was asked about India and Indian cinema, he admitted that for him India = Bollywood. “The moment I think of India, I immediately remember Bollywood and the traditional markets with all the traders, as seen in Aladdin. So, the first thing that came to mind was singing and dancing on the magic carpet in a traditional market,” she says, laughing.

Wi Ha-joon (Squid Game), sitting next to him, nodded in agreement. “It looks really good on you.” She adds, “You obviously have to play Aladdin.” Ha-joon playfully mentions, “I’ll be Aladdin and you’ll be the princess.”

“Yes, I will be Princess Jasmine. I think this kind of project would be quite suitable for me,” Min-young (Marry my husband, what’s wrong with Secretary Kim?) yells!

In the series, Min-young plays Han Seol-ah, an art auctioneer who is trained to quickly evaluate authenticity. Y plays the role of Woo-seok, an insurance investigator who makes a living by detecting anomalies. Both characters are experts at reading people; One specialty of actors is that they give hits close to home.

“I really like watching people, so I look at people carefully or observe their reactions. Maybe it’s because of my work as an actor. But still, I think I’m pretty good at watching people, even if the other person might find it a little weird, you know,” Park shares.

He says the Y’s approach comes from a more secure place. “I also think I can read people well. I tend to be skeptical, because I don’t really trust people that much, which can make me seem a little cold, but I guess I’m born that way. I’m a little on the defensive side. But still, I think I have a good sense of everything in general.”

When asked what their first observation about each other was, both the actors gave hilarious responses. “When I first met Min-young, I actually thought I was watching Han Seol-ah come to life from the script. She seemed a little cold, but very, very beautiful. Now, after spending time with her, I know she’s a very sweet, beautiful, and adorable person, but my first impression of her was a little cold, and reminded me a lot of Seol-ah from the script,” Ha-jun says.

Min-young responded, “When I first met Ha-joon, I also felt like I was watching Woo-seok. You know, I felt like what a great casting choice it was, because the way he spoke, the way he acted, how he was always suspicious, never trusted anyone and sensitive, he was physically just Woo-seok, and he ticked all the boxes. So, I was Felt, there’s no way this series won’t be successful.”

Much of Siren Kiss relies on charged pauses and eye contact, creating a chemistry that gives rise to the show’s themes. For Park, there was a defining moment during filming when she felt she knew her co-star better. “I don’t remember exactly when, but at one point, when I was with Woo-seok, I started to feel very comfortable. I felt like I could really be myself. Then I realized that he’s an actor who really acts with his eyes. And from that point on, he really settled into my heart, so I didn’t really have to act. I was really immersed in those moments. He’s such a brilliant actor, and he also helped me a lot. Has been,” she recalled.

Y describes his experience in front of the camera. “I feel the same way, because there are a lot of scenes where we have to look at each other. Every time we lock eyes, and I look into her eyes, I think she conveys those layered emotions so complexly and beautifully. She’s an actress who really speaks with her eyes. So, I think that’s one of Park Min-young’s greatest strengths as an actor. Even on days when I have to concentrate, The trouble is, the moment we start hanging out and I look into her eyes, I find myself naturally gathering those emotions and I think that’s what makes her a really compelling actor, so, she’s helping me a lot too.”

Both the stars are aware of the global popularity of Indian cinema and its tonal diversity. While Min-young had a dynamic idea, Ha-joon shared, “I know about an Indian movie called KGF, which is a very fierce action film, a very intense film that hunts down villains. So hopefully, if I get an offer, I will look forward to a script that is just as fierce and intense. And I also can’t resist mentioning the globally famous film, 3 Idiots. This one It’s a grassroots comedy film, but it also has a punch to it, which sends out a strong message to the society, so, I’m looking forward to that kind of comedy element as well.”

And should a script demand dance rehearsals? Park smiles and points at her co-star. “He’s a fantastic dancer.”

With Siren Kiss, the pair step into roles that demand emotional precision and mutual trust. Off-screen, their camaraderie is easy. On-screen, it turns into tension you can almost touch.

The first episode of Siren Kiss will release on March 2 on Prime Video.
