Joe Manganiello questions Sofia Vergara’s claims; says divorce meant no kids, ‘I was never like that’

Joe Manganiello shared his story about his divorce from his ex-wife Sofia Vergara. The couple separated in July last year after seven years of marriage.

The 47-year-old True Blood actor addressed the Modern Family star’s claims about their separation in a recent interview with Men’s Journal. The 52-year-old told El Pais this January that he and Manganiello weren’t on the same page when it came to having kids. He said this difference of opinion ultimately led to their divorce.

Read on to find out how Manganiello disagrees with the actress’ claims.

Joe Manganiello claims that different stances on having children were not the reason for the divorce between him and Vergara.

Vergara, who shares son Manolo, 32, with her high school boyfriend, told the aforementioned outlet earlier this year that her marriage fell apart because her younger husband wanted to have children while she did not want to become a mother at an older age. She explained that she believed this was unfair to the child and while she respects people who choose to have children later in life, it was no longer the right choice for her.

Now, Manganiello has commented on Vergara’s claims in an interview published in Men’s Journal on July 16, saying they aren’t entirely true.

The Deal or No Deal Island host shared that he and Vergara had previously tried to have kids for a year and a half, and the two even had a “big conversation” about the topic when they first started dating. The actor claimed that he was okay with Sofia not wanting more kids. In his new interview, Manganiello promised his ex-wife that he would never leave if their plans to have kids didn’t work out, and according to him, he never did.

Manganiello admitted that he wanted children, but said that his and Vergara’s relationship didn’t end because of their disagreement on the matter. He said that it was because they both grew apart and he feels that sometimes.

Expressing disappointment at his character being misrepresented following his split from Vergara, Manganiello said, “To be portrayed as if I’m in some sort of midlife crisis and turned to someone after nine years and gave them an ultimatum, ‘Do this potentially unhealthy thing with your body, or else I’ll leave?’ I was never like that.”

Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara’s divorce recap

In July 2023, the two released a joint statement saying that after seven years of marriage, they have decided to separate. At the time, the former couple politely asked for privacy.

Manganiello was the one who filed the papers with the court. He cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce and listed July 2 as the date of separation.

Since then, both Manganiello and Vergara have moved on with their lives. Manganiello is dating actress Caitlin O’Connor, while Vergara has moved on with a respected orthopedic surgeon named Justin Saliman.
