Javed Akhtar said alcohol addiction created a ‘devil’ in him: I used to get aggressive
Javed Akhtar recently spoke about wasting a decade of his life due to alcohol addiction. He said that he used to become very aggressive after drinking alcohol.

Screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar recently spoke about the time when he was battling alcohol addiction. He said that he used to become a different person after drinking alcohol. But one day he decided to quit drinking and today it has been 33 years since he has touched alcohol.
Recently during a conversation on the YouTube channel we are youngJaved was asked whether his drinking habits It was a result of repressed emotions. He agreed, “It was probably repressed emotions, anger, bitterness. That is why I was quite aggressive after drinking, which I was not otherwise. In my sober moments, I would never be like that. But After drinking another devil would come out (When I was drunk, another demon came out of me).”
However, he decided to quit drinking Javed Akhtar told, “I have done only a few good things in life and one of them is that I quit drinking on July 31, 1991. I never drank alcohol again, not even a sip of champagne. Not even during celebrations. I never touched it again.”
During the interview, the lyricist also shared an advice he would like to give to his younger self. Javed said, “I would tell him that for 20-25 years you kept drinking, don’t do it now.” He further added that he wished he had spent his time learning new things.
He said, “I feel I wasted at least a decade of my life when I could have done a lot more, but I wasted it because of all this. I could have done a lot more, learnt a musical instrument, learnt another language like French or Farsi. I had the time and the facility, but I wasted my time, which is not good. I had to learn a lot more.”
Earlier, during an interview with Mojo Story, Javed Akhtar had shared that he quit drinking the day he realised that he would die by the age of 50 if he continued drinking like this.
