Jatt & Juliet 3 concluded its eight-day extended first week with a worldwide gross of Rs 64 crore, setting a new record for Punjabi films. It surpassed the Rs 62 crore earned by Carry On Jatta 3 exactly a year ago. The film has done record business overseas with USD 4.40 million, while Carry On Jatta 3 had grossed USD 3.45 million. However, in India it is at the second spot with Rs 27.70 crore.
The disappointment for Jatt & Juliet 3 is in East Punjab, which is where the whole difference with Carry On Jatta 3 comes from. In other parts of India, the film has collected just as much as Carry On Jatta 3. Now calling it a disappointment would probably be a bit harsh, as the collection is still the second highest ever for a Punjabi film, but then again the expectations were pretty high considering the history of the franchise. For reference, Jatt & Juliet 1 and 2 were the highest grossing Punjabi films of all time. The first film earned Rs 11 crore in East Punjab, while the previous highest was just Rs 6 crore. The sequel released the next year went even further with a collection of Rs 14 crore.
Jatt & Juliet 3 faced a clash with Kalki 2898 AD, which affected its performance over the weekend. It was expected that the film would probably show stronger trends on weekdays as capacity constraints would become less of a factor. Historically, big Punjabi films have shown bigger holds on weekdays due to massive spillovers. However, that did not happen, as weekday holds were just “good”.
Despite this, the Diljit Dosanjh starrer still has a chance to become the highest grossing Punjabi film worldwide, although a lot will depend on its performance in the next two weeks. Carry On Jatta 3 did not do well, so this will also increase its chances.
