‘It’s sad’: Lil Wayne blames himself for not being prepared for Super Bowl halftime ‘letdown’

Lil Wayne campaigned to be the headlining performer for this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, which is set to take place in his hometown of New Orleans. Despite his efforts and the fans rallying behind him in support, the honor was given to Kendrick Lamar, much to Wayne’s disappointment.

The Annihilate rapper personally addressed the issue in a video posted to Instagram on Friday, September 13. He said, “It broke me, and I’m just trying to pick myself back up again.” Jay-Z, whose Nation Company is the halftime producer, confirmed Lamar to be the headlining performer at the prestigious event last weekend.

“It hurt a lot, it hurt a lot,” Wayne said. “I blame myself that I wasn’t mentally prepared for the situation, because I put myself in that situation mentally.” For the rapper, it was the most desirable opportunity to perform not only in his hometown but on the highest level stage and platform.

After expressing his disappointment, Wayne thanked his fans who supported him and his peers like Nicki Minaj who stood by him in the fight. “I feel like I let you all down by not getting that opportunity,” he said.

The Lollipop rapper has always been vocal about his desire to one day play the main role at Super Bowl halftime. In February, he confessed on YG’s 4Hunnid podcast that he was “praying” to get the call to play the main role on the spectacular stage. “I’m not gonna lie to you, I haven’t gotten the call,” he admitted. “But we’re all praying, we’re keeping our fingers crossed. I’m working hard… I just wish they wouldn’t stop yelling at the guy,” he said.

However, his well-wishers showered love and support on his post and described him as the “best rapper”. One user commented, “You can never disappoint us”, while another said, “You are a legend, those young boys can’t even match you. Thank you, GOAT, for everything you have given and continue to give! Blessings are always king.”

One user called him their musical inspiration and thanked him for everything he’s done and will continue to do. Another well-wisher wrote, “We love you Wayne, keep going!”
