Is your Aadhaar secure? Here’s how you can check who is using your Aadhaar number

Our 12 digit Aadhaar number has become a very important ID document. Whether travelling, securing entry, or opening a new bank account, we are required to share our Aadhaar details to verify our identity. In fact, Aadhaar has made it easier for us to access government services and financial institutions. However, with its increasing use, Aadhaar has also become a common target for scammers trying to exploit it for financial fraud or illegal activities. Therefore it is important to keep your Aadhaar safe.

But how can you check if your Aadhaar is being misused? To help Aadhaar holders monitor activities linked to their Aadhaar, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) – the governing body responsible for Aadhaar – has an online tool called “Authentication History” feature on the myAadhaar portal. This tool allows Aadhaar holders to track and secure their Aadhaar-related activities.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to check how your Aadhaar is being used and how to secure it if you suspect misuse.

To check your Aadhaar history:

, Go to MyAadhaar portal: Visit the official myAadhaar website.

, Login with OTP: Enter your Aadhaar number and the displayed captcha code. Click on “Login with OTP” and use the one-time password sent to your registered mobile number to access your account.

, Access your authentication history: Select the “Authentication History” option and choose a date range to review Aadhaar usage during that period.

– Review details: Now check the listed transactions carefully. If you notice any unfamiliar or suspicious activity, report it immediately.

Report Unauthorized Activity

If you identify any unauthorized activity linked to your Aadhaar number:

– Call UIDAI’s toll-free helpline 1947.

— Email your concerns to help@uidai.gov.in.

Lock Aadhaar Biometrics

Additionally, UIDAI also allows users to prevent misuse of Aadhaar by locking their biometrics. This feature ensures that even if someone gets access to your Aadhaar number, they cannot use your biometric information without your consent.

To lock your Aadhaar biometrics:

Visit UIDAI website: Now go to “Lock/Unlock Biometrics” section.

Enter required details: Provide your Virtual ID (VID), Name, Pin Code and displayed Captcha Code.

Authenticate with OTP: Click on “Send OTP” and use the code sent to your registered mobile number to proceed.

Secure your biometrics: Complete the process of locking your Aadhaar biometrics.

Aadhaar Card Update: Easy Steps to Change Mobile Number

It is advisable to regularly check your Aadhaar activity to ensure that your details are not being misused. UIDAI also encourages Aadhaar holders to keep their details updated, including phone number, address and even biometric details like fingerprint. This is especially important if you have not updated them in the last 10 years, have experienced an accident that affected your biometrics, or if the Aadhaar holder is a child who has turned 15.
