The Princess of Genovia is coming back! Yes, you heard that right. Anne Hathaway, 41, took to Instagram on Friday, October 4, to express her excitement about The Princess Diaries 3, which has been confirmed to be in the works.
Just hours after the third sequel director Adele Lim confirmed to Variety that she is working on The Princess Diaries 3, the news spread across the Internet and sent fans into a tizzy. Hathaway reacted to the news on her social media.
Hathaway, as seen in the Instagram video, expressed her excitement by raising one finger at a time while she lay down. In the next section of the clip where Mia Thermopolis learns that she is the Princess of Genovia and is stunned, she says, “Shut up”. As the next number is two, Hathaway inserts two fingers again. Then comes Julie Andrews, who plays Hathaway’s on-screen grandmother, who is equally shocked.
The video ends with Hathaway raising three fingers and repeating ‘Shut up’ before using the same countdown again. The video features a song by Myra, Miracles Happen (When You Believe), which was used in the first film.

Hathaway’s immense joy in the caption extended to Genovia’s appreciation, where she expressed her joy at meeting the team and seeing the fairy tale again. There were many fans who commented in appreciation, including Kelly Clarkson, who said she was already “sat down” and was happy.
The project will be in safe hands in the form of Adele Lim who directed Joy Ride and Crazy Rich Asians. She loved the previous Princess Diaries films and is looking forward to the next installment of the franchise, which explores women’s happiness and empowerment.
“As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m so excited to be a part of bringing the third installment of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim told Variety.
The first two films in the series, The Princess Diaries, were released in 2001, and its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was released in 2004.
Hathaway previously told People in January 2023 that the belief that a third film could eventually be made was very exciting to her. He also cautioned the audience that it is a very long and tedious process every time.
Both films, The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2, can currently be streamed on Disney+.
