Is it very hard to impress Christopher Nolan? Tom Holland, Matt Damon revealed
Actors Tom Holland and Matt Damon said Christopher Nolan is more open and cooperative in The Odyssey than his reputation suggests. Both reacted to perceptions of Nolan as being rigid or unapproachable.

For years, director Christopher Nolan has enjoyed an almost legendary reputation in Hollywood. Stories about the Oscar-winning filmmaker are circulated like industry folklore: no mobile phones on set, handwritten scripts instead of digital documents, minimal use of CGI, practical effects wherever possible, and a work environment so disciplined that actors often describe it as entering an entirely different world.
However, if you ask odyssey Actors Tom Holland and Matt Damon, the reality couldn’t be more different.

Speaking exclusively to India Today during the Mumbai promotions of the film, the actors revealed that the biggest misconception people have about Christopher Nolan is that he is rude or approachable. In fact, according to Holland, the filmmaker emphasizes collaboration and actively encourages interaction with his actors.
When asked why the perception that people often make about working with Nolan is completely wrong, Holland admitted that he was also surprised by how open the filmmaker becomes once the cameras are on.
Holland said, “The thing I find really amazing is how collaborative he is. He leads from the front, and there’s no doubt he’s the boss, but he’s so open. There’s never a bad time to go and talk to him and ask him questions about his character, and he likes to try things.”
The actor who headlines Nolan’s adaptation odyssey Along with Matt Damon, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, he explained that although Nolan comes to the set knowing what film he wants to make, he doesn’t necessarily bind himself to a single method to achieve it. That flexibility, Holland said, gives the entire cast and crew a sense of ownership over the filmmaking process.
“He has all the elements he needs to make the movie he wants to make, but he doesn’t necessarily know how, on that day, he’s going to execute those elements. To me, it makes it feel like you’re working on an indie movie, but just on a larger scale. I think it’ll probably be something that will surprise people.”
Matt Damon, who has previously collaborated with Nolan interstellar (2014) and oppenheimer (2023) before reuniting with him odysseyCouldn’t agree more. The Oscar-winning actor said what makes the Nolan set different is not just the scale of the production, but also the fact that the director approaches filmmaking with the mindset of an independent filmmaker, even while setting up some of the biggest studio spectacles in the world.
Damon said, “He’s truly an independent filmmaker. He’s doing it on a scale that’s bigger than anything I’ve ever done or seen, but it makes it a really vibrant, exciting work environment because everyone knows they’re contributing.”
After this the actor recalled an interesting incident behind the scenes odysseyRevealing that even Nolan doesn’t always have every technical detail in mind before filming begins. Speaking about shooting the film’s much-discussed Trojan Horse sequence, Damon recalled asking the director how he planned to execute this ambitious set piece.
“I remember asking him about the horse before we shot the interior of the horse. I said, ‘I’m so excited to shoot this. How are we going to do it?’ And he just turned and said, ‘I don’t know.’ We’re just going to jam in there, and we’re going to figure it out,'” he recalled with a laugh.
He also praised Nolan’s technical team for matching that spontaneity with extraordinary precision. Recalling a scene filmed on water with co-star Himesh Patel, Damon said that rehearsals could instantly turn into completely cinematic moments, with departments moving in perfect sync despite huge logistical challenges.
“We’ll be on the boat and Himesh Patel and I will be practicing a scene, and he’ll say, ‘Okay, the camera is on Himesh.’ Then, suddenly, you’ll see the marine coordinator on his walkie-talkie, and the real boats that were in the ocean, because there’s nothing computer-generated, it’s all real, just drift into place behind Himesh, perfectly lined up. That kind of execution, at that speed and at that scale, is really a lot of fun.”
