Ireland celebrates Jessie Buckley becoming the country’s first Best Actress Oscar winner

Actor Jessie Buckley made Oscar history Sunday night, becoming the first best actress winner from Ireland. In Ireland, President Catherine Connolly led the nation’s celebrations for Buckley, along with Irish animator Richard Baynham, who won best visual effects. Avatar: Fire and Ashes.

President Connolly praised Buckley’s “excellent performance”. HamnettThe President also acknowledged Buckley’s achievements in both film and stage throughout his acting career.

“Jessie Buckley’s award is a historic moment. This achievement is not only a thoroughly worthy testament to Jessie’s outstanding performance HamnettBut for his performances in both film and stage in his career so far. I know his proud community in Kerry and beyond will share with him in this wonderful achievement,” Connolly said in a statement, as reported Diversity.

Prime Minister of Ireland Micheál Martin expressed his admiration for Buckley on the X. He wrote, “Congratulations to Jessie Buckley on your historic Oscar success! A well-deserved win for Richard Bayneham in an amazing night for Irish film and performing arts (sic).”

Buckley plays a woman coping with the death of her young son in director Chloé Zhao’s film Hamnett. The actor’s brother Killian speaking to the Irish broadcaster RTESaid, “I’m so proud of her, it’s so beautiful to see someone like that. She’s my sister, but she’s a very kind person and she’s a genuine person.”

During his acceptance speech, Buckley shared that his family was in the audience because “Ireland bought flights for them” and paid tribute to them. “Mom, dad, thank you for teaching us to dream and never be defined by expectations but to care about our passions,” the 36-year-old said.

Hamnett The actor noted that the timing of this honor has a special symbolism as it coincides with Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. She said, “I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart. We all come from a lineage of women who continued to create despite all odds.”

Buckley, who recently became a mother herself, joked that her eight-month-old daughter Isla probably “has no idea what’s going on and is probably dreaming of milk.”

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony was held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on March 16 (IST). For Indian viewers, the ceremony is available for streaming on JioHotstar.
