In short

  • BOE is accused of stealing Samsung OLED display technology
  • ITC has allegedly recommended a ban on Boe OLED imports to the US
  • Apple says iPhones will not be affected by American trade ruling

Amid growing tension between performing manufacturers, a recent case in the United States has expressed concern whether iPhones using Chinese -made screens may face trouble in the US market. But Apple has moved forward to clarify that its products are not part of the dispute and will not be affected in any way.

It comes after the US International Trade Commission (ITC) pronounced the initial verdict in a case associated with the Chinese performance producer BOE. The company, which has been supplying OLED panels for iPhones since 2021, has been accused of using Samsung’s business secrets related to performance technology. ITC has allegedly qualified in Samsung’s complaint and has proposed a ban on BOE.

According to the ITC, BOE and its affiliated firms violated the US trade rules by making imports or planning to sell OLED display parts in the US which were allegedly based on the confidential Samsung Tech. The Commission has suggested the BOE to ban these panels from shipping in the US and has stopped them from selling any remaining stock within the country.

Given that Boe Apple is one of the suppliers of Apple’s iPhones (with Samsung and LG), some reports suggest that it can affect the recent and upcoming models of Apple, including iPhone 15, iPhone 16 and possibly iPhone 17. However, Apple has issued a clear statement rejecting any such link.

“Apple is not a party for this case, and the order has no effect on any apple products,” the company informs 9to5MAC, addressing speculation that the ITC order can ban some iphones.

It is also important to note that the ruling is not yet final. The ITC decision is currently in an early stage, and a final decision is expected to be in the later year. Once this happens, the US President will have a 60 -day window to approve or reject the ruling.

Interestingly, reports suggest that BOE has been approved by Apple to supply LTpo OLED panels for Chinese versions of the iPhone 17 Pro series. But these performances did not allegedly meet Apple’s standards for a global rollout. If there is a change in Apple’s supplier strategy, they are likely to make commercial decisions based on product performance and not due to this legal matter.
