Apple recently introduced the iPhone 16 series to the world. Keeping up with its tradition, the company has also announced new software – iOS 18, which is coming next week. The new OS offers a variety of features, including support for customization, AI power, and Apple intelligence. iOS 18 will also introduce tools like ChatGPT powered Siri, content editing capabilities, and image generation. While the upcoming iPhone 16 series will be the first series to come with iOS 18, will previous iPhones also have the same experience? The answer is yes, iOS 18 will come to previous generation iPhones as well, but to a limit.

List of iPhones that support iOS 18

Apple’s iOS 18 update is compatible with a wide range of iPhone devices, including over 25 models, from the latest iPhone 16 series to older devices like the iPhone SE (2nd generation), ensuring that a wider user base can access the latest features and improvements. Here’s a full list of iPhones that will support iOS 18:

It is worth noting that iOS 18 supported devices are not necessarily compatible with Apple intelligence. Apart from the latest iPhone 16 series, Apple’s AI is coming to only two more devices: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Interestingly, Apple has a habit of discontinuing the Pro models once the new series hits the market. The same will happen for the 15 Pro models as well. Read more about it here.

When will iOS 18 arrive?

The initial release of iOS 18 is scheduled for September 16, marking the official launch of the latest operating system update for compatible iPhone devices. Talking about customization, iOS 18 introduces a new way to customize the home screen, lock screen, and Control Center. You can now arrange apps and widgets in any open space, including placing them right above the dock. New visual effects, such as dark or tinted themes, allow you to give your app icons and widgets a unique look. In addition, you can enlarge the icons for easier access and better visual effect.

iOS 18 offers many customization options

The redesigned Control Center will provide quick access to your most used controls such as media playback, home control, and connectivity options. You will be able to easily swipe between these groups and customize the layout to suit your needs. Additionally, third-party app controls can now be added to Control Center, providing greater flexibility and convenience.

Apple is currently testing select Apple Intelligence features in beta versions of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1, with full updates expected to be released later this fall. However, when Apple Intelligence officially launches, its compatibility will be somewhat restricted. It will only be available on devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro, the recently announced iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models, iPad Air or Pro models equipped with M1, M2, or M4 chips, and Macs powered by Apple Silicon.
