In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Kit Harington revealed that he considers himself lucky to have stayed sober before welcoming children with his wife Rose Leslie. The actor said there was a time when it seemed “physically and emotionally impossible” for him not to drink again.

Harington then expressed that the fact that he can be proud of his sobriety journey is an “accomplishment” in itself. The Game of Thrones actor explained that before coming out sober, he would look in the mirror and “blame myself,” adding that he was disgusted with himself and couldn’t feel proud of what he had achieved in his career.

He further added, “The fact that I am proud to be sober is in itself a mark of being a completely different person.”

Harington explained that when he goes on set and does any work, he takes pride in the fact that he is “putting his all into it”, explaining that at first he felt like he had “a giant monkey on his back” weighing him down.

The Baby Ruby actor said he cannot predict the future and that he may have to “fall seriously ill”, something he said he hopes doesn’t happen. He added that talking about his struggles gives him security.

Harington explained that speaking openly about his addiction challenges is intended to help others, because by hearing from public figures who have had similar struggles and are now genuinely happy and content, people can see that it is possible to move on from their issues and “I can’t imagine going back to the situation I was in.”

Meanwhile, Kit Harington’s series Industry Season 3, Episode 1, is now available to stream on HBO Max, with new episodes released weekly.
