Nobel laureate Professor Paul Michael Romer on Sunday described India’s digital revolution as one of the most inspiring and interesting success stories and said it has set a new benchmark for world powers.

Professor Paul Michael Romer, also a former Chief Economist of the World Bank, is currently in India and will be one of the key speakers at the two-day NDTV World Summit starting October 21.

Sharing his views on India’s digital prowess, Professor Paul pointed out a unique aspect of India’s digital transformation and said that South Asian nations can hugely benefit by emulating it.

He said that India’s digital revolution has not only made people’s lives easier and simpler, but has also emerged as an example for the rest of the world.

Ahead of his participation in the discourse on the NDTV platform, the Nobel laureate lauded the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for successfully advancing digital access to the masses and taking it to every corner of the country.

“The digital revolution here is very interesting because it is being used by the government to provide benefits to all members of the society. This is very different from most countries in the world, where the target is only a few lucky beneficiaries. India’s story is unique Because it is providing benefits to everyone,” he said.

When asked how India’s digital success can become a model for South Asian countries, he said online services like UPI, DBT, DigiLocker and others have shown tremendous success and the southern countries can emulate similar success for themselves. You can follow this to write a story.

“Other countries, especially in the South, should believe that if India can do it, we can do it too. They can take inspiration and confidence from India and have the ambition to create a success story They do not need to depend on this, the rich countries should start working on the basis of their ground reality,” he told the media persons.

When he was questioned about India’s astonishing success in digitalizing the economy despite very limited online literacy, he said that he has always been a strong supporter of technology as a great enabler.

“In the 1980s, I strongly supported making technology a life-changing enabler. Technology can improve the quality of life – and this is visible in Singapore, South Korea and other countries. When China “Growing faster than other countries has been blamed by some, however, in a democracy what matters is a country’s potential, its ambition and vision to achieve.”
