An Indian-origin doctor in Toledo, Ohio, has been sentenced to six months in jail after he admitted secretly recording women in staff toilets at a Toledo hospital. Advait Deshmukh was sentenced in June after pleading guilty to seven counts of attempted evidence tampering and voyeurism.Judge Michael Golding ordered Deshmukh to serve three years of probation, register as a sex offender for 15 years, attend Sexaholics Anonymous meetings and continue sex offender and mental health treatment. The judge also told the court that Deshamul told the court he planned to relocate to a new county in Ohio – Franklin – but he would have to continue the measure there and register as a sex offender.
Deshmukh apologized to the victims during sentencing
Before being sentenced, Deshmukh apologized to the victims. His lawyer urged the court to impose probation rather than prison, arguing that Deshmukh was attending therapy to better understand the behavior that led to the crimes.There were six known victims of Deshmukh’s crimes. One of them, speaking in court, described how the incident had traumatized him. Lindsay, a Toledo hospital employee, told the judge she still checks for hidden cameras in bathrooms and is haunted by the uncertainty of where the photos might have ended up. “Not knowing what was done to the photos is enough to keep me up at night,” he said. “As we all know, nothing is ever truly deleted.“He said the violations continued as investigators, lawyers and others involved in the case viewed those images and he did not know how many other people viewed those images.
Cellphone found in a box in the washroom
The case began, or at least came to light, in June 2025. A hospital employee found a cellphone hidden inside a box in a unisex restroom at the Renaissance Tower at the Toledo hospital. Prosecutors said that when a witness attempted to remove the device, Deshmukh grabbed it and claimed it was his.A joint investigation by ProMedica and Toledo Police uncovered 82 photos taken on the phone between February and May 2025. Investigators identified six victims, none of whom gave permission to be recorded, but said there may be more.At the time of the crime, Deshmukh was a third-year medical resident at the University of Toledo specializing in endourology and urological oncology. The University of Toledo said he was placed on administrative leave following the device’s discovery and that his residency appointment was not renewed following an internal investigation.
