Ilaiyaraaja calls Asha Bhosle a sister in video tribute: Great talent, unique voice

Veteran musician Ilaiyaraaja has expressed deep grief over the demise of iconic singer Asha Bhosle. He fondly remembered their collaboration and prayed for their lasting legacy.

Veteran musician Ilaiyaraaja has expressed grief over the demise of famous singer Asha Bhosle. He died at the age of 92 on 12 April after being admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

In a video message shared on X, Ilaiyaraaja recalled the deep bond between them. He said, “The amount of love and affection she had for me makes it more than just a sad news. Also, I will never forget the respect she had for me as a playback singer. I will never forget the great talent that is Asha Bhosle. Her voice is unique, unique and brilliant.”

Ilaiyaraaja recalled that even on brief visits to Chennai, Asha Bhosle would always visit him. He further added, “Even if she comes to Chennai for a small reason, she never fails to meet me.”

He concluded his tribute with a prayer for his legacy and condolences to his family, saying, “I pray that God grants him greatness. My condolences to his family.”

Asha Bhosle’s first Tamil song was Shenbagamae from the movie Enga Uru Patukaran (1987), which had music composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Their partnership extended to other films such as Naan Sonathe Sattam (1988) and pudhu pattu (1990).

Their last collaboration song was, Nee Parth Parvai from Kamal Haasan Hey Ram! (2000), marking the end of an important creative collaboration.

Asha Bhosle’s contribution to Indian music was immense and her collaboration with Ilaiyaraaja remains a notable chapter in her career. The musician’s heartfelt tribute highlights the respect and affection they have shared over the years.
