Box office clash is nothing new. Major big tentpole films often cross paths during festival weekends. What could be a bigger festival than Pongal for the Kollywood film industry! Here are three iconic Pongal clashes at the Tamil box office.
1. District vs Veeram – 2014
On 10 January 2014, two tentpole films, Jilla and Veeram, faced a massive clash. While the former had Thalapathy Vijay in the lead role, the latter was Ajith Kumar’s film (Padam).
The box office rivalry between Vijay and Ajith is widely popular in Tamil Nadu. Talking about superstardom, apart from Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, these are the two biggest giants of South India. Both the Pongal releases were head-to-head in Tamil Nadu, where Zilla collected ₹51 crore, while Veeram earned ₹50.50 crore.
The Thalapathy Vijay starrer took the lead elsewhere and earned ₹90.5 crore, while Ajith Kumar’s film collected ₹75 crore globally in its entire run.
2. Pettah vs Viswasam- 2019
In 2019, Rajinikanth’s Petta and Ajith Kumar’s Vishwasam released against each other. Although the Thalaivar film remained under Vishwasam in its home state, it took huge hits everywhere, especially in foreign locations.
The worldwide gross collection of Petta stood at Rs 219 crore, while Viswasam ended its theatrical run at Rs 180 crore, with both emerging as big hits at the box office.
3. Warisu vs Thunivu- 2023
Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar once again came face to face with each other during Pongal 2023 when they came up with Varisu and Thunivu respectively. Although both the action dramas received mixed responses, they managed to emerge as the biggest blockbusters of the respective superstars’ careers at the box office.
Varisu took the lead of Rs 110 crore over Thunivu and ended its lifetime theatrical performance at Rs 304 crore, while the Ajith film collected Rs 195 crore globally in its entire run.
The combined box office collection of Varisu and Thunivu was around Rs 500 crore at the worldwide box office.
