Selina Zelatli’s note to brother
“I last spoke to my brother on 23 August 2024, a few days before he was transferred to prison (6 September 2024) where he was held in secret detention until the end of May 2025. Subsequently, he was transferred to a detention center in the Middle East, where he has been held without formal proceedings for almost 18 months, and access to him has been limited and controlled,” Se wrote.
Talking about Vikrant’s decision, she said, “I cannot speculate on what advice might have been given or said to my brother in custody. He is extremely protective of me and has no knowledge of what is happening in the outside world. Given my current circumstances, it is possible that he may have received partial information and is trying to protect me from further financial and emotional stress. In such circumstances, any decision taken by a detainee must be seen in context.”
Celina further clarified the situation, saying that her brother has also refused to talk to other family members and stressed that her only concern is his well-being and accessing proper legal aid.
“I believe he has at times even refused to speak to other relatives and has said he does not want to speak to them or anyone else. The only thing that has concerned me deeply throughout all this is his physical and mental well-being. This writ was never about me. It was always about ensuring the possibility of meeting and talking to my brother and, above all, that proper legal representation is appointed for him,” she wrote.
In the end he expressed his gratitude towards the Government of India for helping at every level. “I am grateful that the Government of India has had consular access to him nine times since June 2025 and has stated that they will continue to encourage him to accept legal aid whenever he and his wife are ready. I am grateful that the State is paying attention to his well-being while further action is taken. My only intention has always been his safety, legal protection and respect. I respect that he is trying to protect me in his own way. However, I stand with him Will remain and ensure that they are not left without proper legal representation (sic),” she said.
