Police in Alaska are investigating after human remains were found inside the chest freezer of a property in Juneau while relatives were cleaning out the home following the death of a family member.According to a Juneau police release, officers were called to a residence in the 6500 block of Glacier Highway on July 19 at approximately 7:59 p.m. after a family member reported human remains were found inside a locked building on the property.Police said responding officers confirmed the presence of decapitated human remains.Investigators have made a preliminary identification and believe the remains may be those of an adult male family member.

Next of kin have been notified, but formal identification will be made by the state medical examiner’s office, police said.Officials said it was not known how long the remains had been stored in the freezer. Detectives also established that no missing person reports related to the deceased had been filed with the Juneau Police Department.According to police, the remains have been transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the person’s identity and determine the cause and manner of death.Police said there is no known risk to the public at this stage. Investigation is ongoing.
