What exactly is Batte Idli?
Batte Idli is not a separate type of Idli at all, but a method of making it. In Kannada, “Batta” means a piece of cloth. Generally, idli is prepared by greasing the idli plates with oil before pouring the batter. In this method, idli batter is poured directly onto a wet, clean cloth placed on the pan and steamed. The cloth gives a unique texture to the idlis and keeps them moist and soft for a long time. This is a traditional method that adds a touch of authenticity to your idli making process.
How is Batte Idli different from greased Idli?
Although both Batte Idli and Ghee Lagi Idli taste similar, the main difference lies in their texture and maintaining moisture. Batte idlis – which are steamed on a clean cloth – remain soft and moist even after a few hours of steaming, making them suitable for long-term use. On the contrary, greased idli starts drying quickly. So, you can choose the technique based on your preference and convenience.
