Honey Singh highlights misogyny in Gulzar’s song Beedi: Why am I the target?
Honey Singh defended his songs against objectification claims, pointing to Gulzar’s controversial lyrics. He questioned why he is criticised while Gulzar is praised.
Singer-rapper Honey Singh recently hit back at people who criticise him for objectifying women in his songs. Citing examples of veteran lyricist Gulzar’s songs like ‘Beedi’ and ‘Namak Ishq Ka’ from the film Omkara, the rapper questioned why people don’t object to these songs and slammed him for his songs.
while talking to The Times of India, Singh said, “I don’t care about it, but I feel I must respond to it. Gulzar sahab wrote, ‘I have lit a bidi and drank it from my heart, there is a big fire in my heart (Bidi song lyrics) Where is a woman’s liver (Where is the chest)? That’s misogynistic to me. ‘The salt of love is on my tongue’ (Salt song lyrics), ‘Why is he talking about a woman’s tongue…’
‘Bidi’ written by Gulzar was sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Sukhwinder Singh. This song from the 2006 film Omkara starring Bipasha Basu, Ajay Devgn-Kareena Kapoor Khan was composed by Vishal Bharadwaj.
Honey Singh, who has given songs like ‘Brown Rang’ and ‘Desi Kalakaar’, objected to the criticism, while Gulzar was praised as a ‘legend’.
“Why am I the only one wrong? I did not speak earlier, but today I am speaking these things. If I did not respond earlier, people would say ‘He is an easy target, talk about him’ “Why am I wrong? I did not say it earlier, I am saying it now. I never responded, so people said he is an easy target, let’s talk about him,” Singh said.
He disagrees with claims that he objectifies women in his songs. “I’m not objectifying women, It doesn’t happen a little “It is not like that,” Singh said.
The singer-rapper further added, “What kind of songs were made earlier? Even then, they were considered songs. I don’t talk about controversial songs like ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’. But why is Honey Singh abused by calling him a legend? We are being modern, but thinking backwards.”
A documentary based on Honey Singh’s life will soon release on Netflix. Meanwhile, the singer is currently promoting his latest album Glory.
