Highest first day grossing movies at Indian box office: Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 A.D. 4th

Kalki 2898 AD grossed around Rs 101 crore at the Indian box office yesterday, making it the fourth film to hit a century on its opening day. The three films ahead of Kalki are Baahubali 2, RRR and KGF Chapter 2.

Prabhas tops the list of top openers, with five of his films in the top ten, including one at the top. Since 2017, all of his films except one (Radhe Shyam) have been in the top five positions. This has been made possible by the fact that he is a huge star in the Telugu film industry and is well known in the Hindi belt as well.

Telugu states can do a very good business on the first day, with the possibility of more than Rs 70 crore. Also, Karnataka has also opened well for Telugu films, if you can make a good number of films in Hindi as well, then it is enough to make a big number of films nationally.

This gives the Telugu film industry an edge over others in terms of opening day records, which is evident from the fact that seven out of the top ten films have either Telugu leads or directors.

Here are the top fifteen highest-grossing films on opening day at the Indian box office:

In India, 3D charges are not reported in the gross numbers, although they should be as per the global standard. With 3D charges included, RRR will likely be at par or ahead of Baahubali 2. Kalki had a wide 3D release and will likely gross around Rs 105 crore with 3D charges added. 2.0 will be in the top ten with 3D charges included.
