On Valentine’s Day, Sutapa Sikdar remembered Irrfan Khan in her unfiltered way with green vegetables, red memories and a quiet rebellion against clichés.

In a day filled with roses and rehearsal announcements, Sutupa Sikdar chose something more intimate. This Valentine’s Day, she wrote a heartfelt note to her late husband, Irrfan Khan – not laced with grand romance, but laced with remembrance, humor and a touch of rebellion.

In her candid post, Sutapa recalled how she and Irrfan had never actually celebrated Valentine’s Day. Not out of fear, she clarified, but by choice. He described such “days” as a clever invention of business companies and wrote that they belonged to a generation untouched by hysteria. Instead of red roses, she suggested organic vegetables from her farm as a gift – causing her son’s eyes to roll and an imaginary echo of Irrfan’s voice to tease, “Hey friend, let’s eat something good.”” (Hey, we’ll make something good)

Why didn’t they celebrate Valentine’s Day?

According to Sutapa, the couple found commercialization of love unnecessary. They mentioned how they grew up in a time when Valentine’s Day was not aggressively marketed – and that they were perfectly content without it. Still, he said choices are respected in his home. If his sons want to celebrate, they are free to do so. Even if it means choosing red instead of green.

O what is Romeo’s connection with Irfan?

The post also refreshed memories Hey Romeo!Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor, Trupti Dimri and Nana Patekar. The film, scheduled to release on February 13, was initially envisioned to star Deepika Padukone in the lead role alongside Irrfan. That version never materialized.

Bhardwaj and Irrfan formed a tremendous creative partnership in films like Maqbool, 7 Khoon Maaf and Haider. Sutupa also congratulated Bhardwaj on the release of the film, remembering that it was once titled Sapna Didi.

A love story beyond clichés

Irrfan died in 2020 due to complications related to a colon infection following treatment for a neuroendocrine tumor. He is survived by Sutapa and his sons Babil and Ayaan.

This Valentine’s Day, while the world was immersed in red, Sutupa quietly declared it “Happy Kaithal Day”. In their world love never needed a calendar.
