Hansal Mehta reviews Black Warrant: It’s a masterclass from Vikramaditya Motwane

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta shared a lengthy review of Netflix show Black Warrant on social media on Monday. He praised the series and mentioned director Vikramaditya Motwane for bringing a ‘masterclass’ on OTT. The director also named all the lead actors of the series and praised them for their memorable performances in the show.

Black Warrant was released on Netflix on Friday, January 10 and received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. In his review, Mehta praised Netflix for supporting ‘non-template narrative’ and highlighted the efforts of the producers to be ‘creatively sensitive’.

He praised actor Zahaan Kapoor, who debuts with Mehta’s Faraaz in 2022. The director talked about his trajectory as an actor and how far he has come. He mentioned Zahan and the other actors in the series, and wrote, “Okay, this is turning into an essay – but @zahankapoor, I’m so proud of you. What a brilliant star! Also, @itsrahulbhat gave an excellent performance Did it, as does @paramvircheema07 and the real MVP? @castingchhabra’s casting is in pristine form, making you notice. But the character is compelling and has been brought to life thoughtfully.”

Black Warrant is based on a book of the same title, co-authored by Sunil Kumar Gupta and journalist Sunetra Chaudhary. The series gives an inside look at Asia’s largest prison – Tihar Jail, and also comments on the Indian judicial system. Set in the 80s, the series showcases several high-profile cases, including the Ranga-Billa case of 1982. Notorious ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Sobhraj also appears in the series.

The show is currently running on Netflix.
