Hans Zimmer effect? AR Rahman says his name will force non-Indians to watch Ramayan

Composer AR Rahman said that the presence of Hans Zimmer in Ramayana will attract audiences outside India to the film. His comments put musical collaboration at the center of the project’s global pitch.

Talking about the collaboration, Rahman called it ‘epic’ and said that Zimmer’s presence will make many non-Indians curious to know what he has done in an Indian film.

In an interview with journalist Faridoon Shahryar, Rahman said, “I think it’s an epic collaboration. That too, doing a film that is our own, from our country and culture. Bringing him to the world for non-Indians is almost like an ambassador. His name will definitely inspire many people to watch the film. At least a certain section is going to see what Hans Zimmer has done in an Indian film.”

Rahman also talked about Zimmer’s status as an artist and said that it has been a great honor to work with him. He added, “He has also worn many hats. He is a true artist who thinks very differently than other people. He set a standard, inspiring generations. It is definitely a great honor to work with him in one of India’s greatest films.”

Rahman’s scale Ramayana

Rahman described the film as one of the biggest projects of his career. Recalling watching the trailer in 3D, he said that the story already held deep respect, but what stood out to him most was the technology. He described the music and sound as well as the 3D experience as incredible and said that he had not seen anything like it in India or anywhere in the world as a piece of art. He expressed, “It’s so incredible on 3D, music and sound.”

The film is being produced by Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The makers have positioned it as a large-scale mythological project rooted in Indian culture. Earlier, producer Namit Malhotra had said that the combined budget of both the parts will be more than $500 million i.e. Rs 4,000 crore.

Director talks about responsibility

Director Nitish Tiwari had previously said that he felt ‘scared, challenged and inspired’ when he was first offered the film. He said that adaptation Ramayana Came with ‘an important moral responsibility’. Malhotra, in a birthday note to the director, praised Tiwari’s frankness and decency, and said he was confident in taking ‘our country’s greatest story’ to audiences around the world.

The two-part film directed by Nitish Tiwari stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravi Dubey as Laxman. Part 1 is scheduled for Diwali 2026, Part 2 is scheduled for Diwali 2027.
