At least 30 people were killed Saturday in a stampede as large crowds gathered to celebrate an annual festival at the historic site at Citadel Laferriere in northern Haiti, officials said.Jean-Henri Petit, civil defense chief of Haiti’s Nord department, said the stampede occurred at the entrance to the historic fort, an early 19th-century building built shortly after the country gained independence from France, Reuters reported. The historic site, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was packed with students and visitors attending the annual event. Petit said the overcrowding combined with the rain contributed to the rapid deterioration of the situation. In a statement, Haiti’s Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime said he “expresses his sincere condolences to the bereaved families and assures them of our deep solidarity during this time of mourning and great suffering.”He said attendees included “many young people”, although authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the victims or provided a detailed description of the casualties.Officials said emergency teams were responding to the scene and warned that the death toll could rise as more information emerged.
