The Gujarat High Court has lifted the temporary ban on the release of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut film ‘Maharaj’. The film is currently streaming on Netflix. The court ruled that the film, based on the events related to the 1862 Maharaj defamation case, was not intended to hurt the sentiments of any community.

Justice Sangita K. Vishen, who had earlier stayed the release of the film on June 13, after watching the movie, allowed Netflix to stream it. ‘Maharaj’ stars Aamir Khan’s son Junaid along with Jaideep Ahlawat and Sharvari Wagh in lead roles.

“This court has come to a prima facie conclusion that the film ‘Maharaaj’ is based on the events which gave rise to the filing of the defamation case and is not intended to outrage the feelings of the Pushti Margi community. The film was certified by the expert body Central Board of Film Certification after considering the relevant guidelines. The interim relief granted on June 13 is cancelled,” the court said.

Originally scheduled to release on June 14, ‘Maharaj’ was put on hold after the High Court restrained Netflix from streaming it. The decision came after a group of traders petitioned the court, arguing that the film had the potential of hurting the religious sensibilities of the Vaishnav community.

Take a look at ‘Maharaj’ here:

The stay order was issued on a petition filed by devotees of Lord Krishna and followers of Vallabhacharya (Pushtimarg sect). The petition alleged that the film, which is apparently based on the Maharaj defamation case of 1862, may affect public order and incite violence against the followers of the sect and Hinduism.

Apart from Junaid, the film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey, with Sharvari Wagh in a guest role. ‘Maharaj’ is directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of YRF Entertainment.
