Green cards of 3 Iranian citizens with ties to the Tehran regime have been revoked, who are now in ICE custody

Three Iranian citizens with alleged ties to Tehran’s body politic have had their green cards revoked and are now in ICE custody, the latest in a series of actions by Washington targeting individuals associated with the Iranian regime.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Sayed Isa Hashemi, his wife Maryam Tahmasebi and their son were detained by authorities after being deemed a potential threat to national security. The family was living in Los Angeles before their arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.According to the New York Post report, all three had been living in the US for years and were living a comfortable lifestyle before their detention. The State Department cited his ties to Iran’s ruling establishment as grounds for the action.Hashemi is the son of Masoumeh Ebtekar, a controversial Iranian figure who gained global attention during the Iran hostage crisis. Ebtekar, often known as “Screaming Mary”, served as a spokesperson for the terrorists who attacked the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held US diplomats hostage for 444 days. He was criticized for promoting propaganda during the crisis.Hashmi entered the United States through San Francisco International Airport in September 2014 on an F-1 student visa. By 2016, he, his wife, and their son had obtained green cards during the administration of former US President Barack Obama.Officials said Hashmi worked as a lecturer at the Chicago School of Psychology. Reports say he declined to comment on his mother’s past when contacted. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that all three individuals were considered a national security threat. Announcing the decision, Rubio said that America “can never be home to anti-American terrorists or their families.”“His family should never be allowed to take advantage of the extraordinary privilege of living in our country,” he said. The development follows a similar move last week involving relatives of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani, who led Iran’s Quds Force and was killed in a US drone strike in 2020. US officials revoked the green cards of his niece, Hamideh Suleimani Afshar, and her daughter, who were later detained and now face deportation. Rubio accused Afshar of supporting the Iranian government while living in the United States. “Until recently, Hamideh Suleimani Afshar and her daughter were green card holders and living proudly in the United States. This week, I terminated the legal status of both Afshar and her daughter and they are now in the custody of ICE, pending removal from the United States,” Rubio said in a post. The MAGA base says that holding a green card is a privilege rather than a right, and can be revoked if a person is found to pose a threat. The latest action comes amid increased tension between America and Iran.
