Introduction

The Google Pixel 9 Pro is new to this year’s lineup. The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL came after the Pixel 8 Pro, and the 9 Pro is a new addition to the portfolio – it’s a compact, full-featured flagship that has all the features of its bigger XL sibling.

Compact Pixels aren’t a new concept in themselves, but this is the first time Google is bringing the entirety of its A-game to this form factor. The Pixel 9 Pro has a 48MP, 5x optical periscope telephoto camera – the same as the Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Pixel 9 Pro also has UWB. Frankly, it’s amazing that Google managed to fit so much extra hardware into what’s essentially the same as the non-Pro Pixel 9.

Google has also paid some extra attention to the Pro’s display. It’s slightly larger than the Pixel 8’s display and better than the regular Pixel 9’s display. The resolution has been upgraded to 1280 x 2856 pixels, maximum brightness has been improved and there’s LTPO technology for dynamic refresh rate adjustment.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro also gets a 42MP selfie camera – which is the same as the Pixel 9 Pro XL and better than the vanilla Pixel 9’s 10.5MP selfie.

Unboxing

This year’s Pixels are being shipped in a recycled cardboard package. There’s no plastic anywhere, not even on the inside, which is nice and environmentally friendly. There’s also a cradle for the phone inside, which keeps it nice and secure for transport. The box is also pretty sturdy.

There is hardly anything in the way of accessories in the retail package. You only get a Type-C to Type-C cable in the box and nothing else. The Pixel 9 Pro charges at a maximum rate of 27W and does so via standard Power Delivery (PD), which is good news as you can easily find a charger. Still, we would have really liked to have found a charger in the box.
