After years of speculation, Google has finally confirmed that it is working to merge Chromos and Android in an integrated platform. Sameer Samat, president of Android Ecosystem at Google, revealed the company’s plans in a conversation Tekardar – For the first time a senior executive has officially accepted the move. “I asked because we are going to add chromos and Android to a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they are doing,” Samat said, when he was looking at the use of reporters such as MacBook Pro, iPhone and Apple Watch.
Samat’s comments still provide a clear indication that Google intends to bring two of its operating systems together. While rumors of such merger have been broadcast from the end of 2024, the company had never formally announced the project. At that time, reports suggested that it would be a multi-year attempt to turn Chromos into Android-a change that is now going on.
Although Google has not shared a timeline or full details, Samat’s comments suggest that the target is to create a more spontaneous cross-device experience-a one that bridles laptops, tablets and smartphones more effectively. The step can also potentially strengthen the position of Android in many form factors and help Google to build strict integration between its ecosystem of equipment.
The infection will not be overnight. In early 2024, Google started laying groundwork by merging major parts of Android kernel into Chromos. The company said that changes will be able to adopt AI facilities in equipment rapidly. The confirmed merger seems to seem to be the next logical step. If all go to plan, the future chrombooks can ship with this integrated OS, offer better compatibility with Android apps and strict integration with Android phones. Recently a leak was also indicated on a potential pixel-branded laptop, internal the “Snow”, which could serve as a showcase for new software.
During the previous year, Android itself has developed to include features such as more desktops. The upcoming Android 16 update is expected to offer a dedicated desktop mode with multi-window multitasking on the external display. The same feature is also set to come on Android Tablet, making them more viable as laptop options.
Nevertheless, this may be some time before seeing the results of Google’s merger plans to consumers. The integrated platform is expected to take several years to roll out. And while some had expected an announcement at the mid-August Pixel 10 launch event of the Google rumor, current reports show that this is unlikely.
