Hollywood star George Clooney and former US President Donald Trump have reignited a familiar celebrity versus politics feud after Trump took aim at Clooney’s recent decision to acquire French citizenship. The exchange has rapidly attracted online attention, especially with the 2026 US midterm elections looming.

On New Year’s Eve, Trump commented on Clooney’s move on Truth Social, calling it “good news!” Said. Revisiting the actor’s 2024 opinion article in which he urged President Joe Biden to step away from the presidential race. In a lengthy post, Trump mocked Clooney’s political views, criticized his support of Democratic leaders and dismissed his film career, claiming that the actor was “not a movie star at all” and that he made “very few, and completely mediocre, movies.”

Trump also noted Clooney’s support for Democratic candidates after last year’s widely discussed debate, using his trademark slogan, “Make America Great Again!” Before signing he predicted what he described as the “future defeat” of the party.

Clooney, who has never shied away from political commentary, responded with a sharp comment of his own. Echoing Trump’s slogan, the actor said, “I completely agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”

Clooney, his wife Amal and their two children were recently granted French citizenship. The actor had previously talked about valuing France’s strict privacy laws, saying that they offer his family more protection from paparazzi intrusions. While some observers believe Clooney’s response indicates his hopes for political change in Congress during the upcoming elections, he has not directly addressed the speculation.

In a recent interview with DiversityClooney also reflected on his past conversations with Trump, revealing that the two once had a cordial acquaintanceship. “I knew him very well,” Clooney said. “He called me often. I saw him in clubs and restaurants. He’s a big fool. Well, he was. That all changed.”

The actor also criticized major US television networks for their handling of legal cases involving Trump. While Clooney argued that stronger resistance from broadcasters could have changed the political landscape, he expressed frustration at missed opportunities for accountability.
