Legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal, 90, passed away on December 23. Celebrities like Shekhar Kapoor, Chiranjeevi and Manoj Bajpayee paid tribute to the visionary director on social media.

Famous filmmaker Shyam Benegal died on Monday at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai. He was 90 years old. Many celebrities including Shekhar Kapoor, Hansal Mehta, Manoj Bajpayee, Chiranjeevi and Karan Johar shared their condolences on social media. The filmmaker was suffering from chronic kidney disease.

Director Shekhar Kapur paid an emotional tribute to legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal. Kapoor praised Benegal as a creator of what is now known as “new wave” cinema in India. “He created ‘new wave’ cinema. #ShyamBenegal will always be remembered as the man who changed the direction of Indian cinema with Ankur, Manthan and countless other films. He gave birth to great actors like Shabama Azmi and Smita Patil Made. Farewell.” My friend and guide (sic),” he wrote on X.

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi paid his last tribute to the famous director on X. He wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Shyam Benegal, one of the finest filmmakers and great intellectuals of our country. He invented and nurtured some of the finest films.” India’s talents. His films, biographies and documentaries are part of India’s greatest cultural treasures!! A fellow Hyderabadi and former Rajya Sabha member, Benegal Sab’s excellent works will always be held in great esteem in Indian cinema! Rest in peace sir (sic).”

Manoj Bajpayee, who worked with Benegal in the film Zubaida, shared a BTS photo from the sets of the film and called it a ‘heartbreaking loss’. “A heartbreaking loss for Indian cinema. Shyam Benegal was not just a legend, he was a visionary who redefined storytelling and inspired generations. Working with him in Zubaida was a transformative experience for me, I will always be grateful for the lessons I learned from his unique storytelling style and understanding of performance, and it was an absolute honor to work with him. His legacy will live on in the stories he told and his life, Shanti Mile, Shyam Babu, Om Shanti,” his note read.

Akshay Kumar, Karan Johar and Kajol also paid their tribute to the legendary filmmaker.

Shyam Benegal was known for films like Ankur, Mandi, Manthan and others, most of which were released in the mid-70s or 80s and became known as part of parallel cinema in India.
